Peace Through Service

Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka

Rotary International President Tanaka posed the question, “I would like to know what my theme for the year, ‘Peace Through Service’ means to you and how will you use the theme?” My response:

Thank you for calling on Rotarians around the world to create Peace Through Service.  We have always sought to create and implement service projects that lead to a sustainable way of life and sustainable peace for all of us. As a direct result of RI Foundation’s shift of focus and your choice of our theme for this year, my District 5220 has created a Peace through Service Committee which I chair.  We will seek to transform conflict dynamics into peaceful ones.

I am mindful of an old hymn that says, ‘Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.’ My personal understanding of your theme is to co-create and contribute to a culture of peace in myself, my family, my Rotary Club and District and to the communities where we live and work.  I see thousands of Rotarians on the front lines, spreading peace everywhere we are able, both symbolically and with hands on projects.
